Guess Black girls can be Cinderella too. If you have been loving Kenyan star Lupita Nyong’o on screen and on stage then get ready to fall in love with her all over again.
American film company Disney who had many young girls believing in a happy ending with films such as Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast and more under their belt are out with a brand new film titled ‘Queen of Katwe’
The film on the other hand is not an animation,
Lupita acts as Harriet Mutesi, the mother of a Ugandan chess star named Phiona Mutesi,
Phiona is ‘young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.’
”This movie is so close to my heart. It tells the story of Phiona Mutesi, who proves to us that daring to dream is worth it. I play her mother!”
The film also stars award-winning actor David Oyelowo who is of Nigerian descent and was directed by Mira Nair produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher and John Carls. Will Weiske and Troy Buder take on the role as executive producers.
