''I Didn't Love My Body'' – Gabrielle Union Chats About Her Life With Harpers Bazaar

Gabrielle Union has come long way from playing a hot high school cheerleader in the teen movie Bring It On back in the year 2000 to taking on roles such as BET’s Being Mary Jane and even the controversial film Birth of a Nation

In a recent feature with Harpers Bazaar US, Mrs Wade chats about how she used to have low self esteem, being a mother to four boys (including her nephew and Dwayne Wade’s 3 kids), starring in Birth of a Nation and ”white privilege ”

On starring in Birth Nation she said…

We prayed and we called upon the ancestors…basically: ‘Please don’t let the Bring It On chick f*ck this movie up!'”

On her previous ideologies about what a black girl should be….

”I didn’t love my skin color, I didn’t love my lips. I didn’t love my nose, I didn’t love my hair. I didn’t love anything. I didn’t love my body. Because no one was choosing me—my self-esteem was determined by somebody choosing me.”

“I used to curl my lips, and I see pictures and I look insane, but it was me trying to minimize my blackness. It all boiled down to: I need some fool to choose me and then I can be okay with being brown.”
